PRESS RELEASE
World Vision and VisionFund Insurance Advance a Climate Protection for Vulnerable Communities in the Amazon Basin
2 October 2026
World Vision and VisionFund International (VFI) are advancing a new generation of parametric meso climate insurance solutions designed to help vulnerable communities respond faster to floods, droughts and other climate shocks, while reducing the financial strain these crises place on families.
Across the Amazon Basin and other climate-vulnerable regions, increasingly frequent and severe weather events are destroying crops, disrupting livelihoods and pushing families deeper into poverty.
Working with Global Parametrics and funded by the InsuResilience Solutions Fund, VisionFund will design a two-peril parametric meso-insurance for World Vision offices in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia and Peru as part of the wider Amazon Basin Initiative. Based on VisionFund’s extensive experience of this type of solution for its microfinance institutions, the design of the solution commencing in the last quarter of 2026, will provide a proactive safety net for each of the offices that allows them to rapidly respond to a disaster. Under the model, parametric meso-insurance provides World Vision with pre-arranged funding when satellite-monitored indicators—such as rainfall, soil moisture or flood levels—reach predefined thresholds. Payouts are automatic, eliminating lengthy damage assessments and enabling World Vision to rapidly deploy cash assistance, essential supplies and recovery activities, while reducing its reliance emergency appeals.
A complementary climate decision-making tool translates weather information into practical guidance, enabling World Vision teams and communities to activate contingency plans and take preventive action before a crisis escalates.
The integrated approach builds on VFI's experience in inclusive insurance, including more than eight years of climate meso-insurance and World Vision’s extensive disaster preparedness and response experience in the Amazon Basin region and globally. The model in the Amazon Basin will also be a template for replication in South East Asia and Southern Africa initially.
“This approach moves disaster and climate response from reactive fundraising towards pre-arranged, predictable protection,” said Solène Favre, VFI Global Director, Inclusive Insurance. “By providing a tool that brings institutional risk financing World Vision can implement its pre-planned disaster response activities faster.”
