Life can sometimes take unexpected turns, bringing challenges that can crush the human spirit. But even in the darkest moments, a little touch of love, support, and the right mindset can transform pain into power.
"Empowered Worldview changed my life and brought back my happiness after I lost everything," says Madam Christina, a 55-year-old mother of two from Ghana, Apolonia City in Ashaiman. Madam Christina is a widow, she lives with her youngest daughter and her sister, who is battling kidney disease.
Her journey with VisionFund Ghana began in 2020 when she took a loan to expand her small shop, selling bags of rice, cooking oil, and tomato paste. With the loan, her business flourished until tragedy struck. Thieves broke into her shop at night and stole everything she had worked so hard for. Devastated but determined, she took a loan to rebuild. But the misfortune didn’t end there. The thieves came back, looted her shop again, and left her with nothing.
"I was totally broken. I just wanted to give up," Christina recalls.
With no money to restart her business, struggling to pay for her sister’s medical bills, and taking care of her daughter alone, she felt hopeless; the weight of her burdens nearly crushed her spirit. She was ready to give up until she was introduced to the Empowered Worldview (EWV) training by VisionFund Ghana officer, Mr. Newman.
"At first, I thought it was a waste of time. No training could bring back what I had lost. But I decided to give it a try," she says.
That single decision changed everything.
The Empowered Worldview training helped Christina rediscover the hope and determination she had lost. She learned to let go of her pain and disappointment and to focus on new opportunities. The training encouraged her to restart with what she had and to diversify her business if the current one wasn’t working.
With the newfound courage, she took another loan, but this time, instead of selling bags of rice, she decided to sell tubers of yam. At first, business was slow. Some days, she made as little as 35 Ghana Cedis (approximately USD 2.26) in daily sales. But Christina remembered another lesson from the training that taught them to look for ways to improve and grow their business.
That’s when she had a breakthrough idea. She started frying some of the yam and selling them with a special spicy sauce. It was a game-changer. What started as a simple idea turned into a thriving business. Word spread quickly, and soon, Christina became the go-to lunch vendor in her entire community. From making just 35 Ghana Cedis a day, she now earns up to 600 Ghana Cedis (USD 38.71) daily!
"I learned so much from the EWV training, I learned to work hard and not compare myself to others. I learned to think outside the box and take control of my future. I discovered I could even run multiple businesses. Most importantly, I learned to save wisely and spend only on what truly benefits me." Christina shared.
The training also taught her the power of communal living. Through an eye-opening group activity, participants were challenged to use their resources to create a long rope that could save someone. That exercise showed them the importance of supporting one another in business and life.
Today, Christina is not just running a successful business, she is part of a growing network of empowered individuals who uplift and inspire each other. She has also employed one single mother to help her run the business, she takes care of her child and sick sister from the same business.
"I urge everyone to take the Empowered Worldview training seriously. It brought meaning to my life after all the struggles. If I could rise again after losing everything, so can you," she says with a smile.
Christina’s story is a powerful reminder that setbacks do not define us. It is how we rise up from them that truly matters. Through resilience, faith, and the right mindset, anyone can turn their struggles into success.
