Rebuilding Home, Restoring Livelihood

Tin Myaing, a 58-year-old farmer from Sintgaing Township, Mandalay Region, lost her home and her 95-year-old mother-in-law in the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28.

Tin Myaing lived with her mother-in-law, her son, her daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren, aged 9 and 3. For over a decade, she has been a VisionFund Myanmar client, steadily expanding her plum tree farming business with agricultural loans. With affordable interest rates, she was able to grow her farm from 100 to 300 plum trees. The additional income allowed her to make lasting improvements for her family, including building a fence, a toilet, and digging a well for clean water.

When the earthquake hit, it disrupted her family’s livelihood.

“I was in the kitchen preparing lunch when the ground suddenly shook, and the house walls collapsed,” she recalls. “My mother-in-law was trapped under the rubble as she couldn’t run, calling out for help. My daughter-in-law and grandchildren were also screaming as we tried to escape.”

Tin Myaing’s mother-in-law tragically lost her life, and her daughter-in-law was injured. Tin Myaing’s home was damaged; only the kitchen remains standing, and the family now lives beside the ruins of their home.

Tin Myaing received World Vision's emergency support, including rice and dry goods, to help the family meet their basic needs immediately after the aftermath.

With a 1,000,000 MMK recovery loan from VisionFund Myanmar, Tin Myaing has begun rebuilding. “I must rebuild our family home. This is a basic need for us,” she said with quiet determination.

Tin Myaing’s story reflects VisionFund Myanmarʼs commitment to standing with families in crisis, providing timely financial support that restores hope, dignity, and the means to rebuild.
